A Holy Calling is a Hard Calling

Motherhood was not designed to make me "happy," but to make me holy.

*Before you read ahead, let me clarify that I ADORE my children and I love being their mother. These are my random, yet hopefully collected thoughts on a part of motherhood that I believe others might be feeling and are afraid to confess*

In Genesis 3:16 God gave His curse to the woman, "I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children." The New King James version says, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children..." I think something we mothers overlook is that God didn't just curse us with pain in actual labor, but with grief in all things when it comes to raising children. Think about when you first become pregnant. Your body goes through changes that can be anything but a blessing. Sickness, fatigue, hormones that can leave you severely depressed, and so on. For me, my curse in pregnancy is a severely stuffy nose (called pregnancy rhinitis). When I say severe, I mean sometimes my nose is 100% blocked leaving me chewing with my mouth open just so I can taste my food, nasal steroids and a crazy dry mouth in the morning...for ALL nine months! I know some of you would trade your nausea and vomiting for a stuffy nose, but alas, this is my curse. And the kid isn't even born yet!

I think you get the point. From conception we have pains in childbearing. Then you actually have the baby (painful) and without a chance to "recover" you immediately are swept into a world of feedings, neediness and little sleep. At first this might seem bearable, but then add another child, and then another. Oh you women of strength who make decisions to increase your quiver! I did make the choice for three. And now I think I must be nuts. Right now I have two toddlers and one on the way. When it's all said and done I will have three children ages 3 and younger. WHAT?! No, I am not crazy. And neither are you! Wait, maybe I take that back.

I sit here today with a stuffy nose and extreme fatigue. And I mean extreme - it's bad. My poor husband currently has a roommate who can't pick up after herself, leaves dishes around and puts junk on the floor because that spot looked cozy for that item. I do what I can to make sure that my kids stay safe and fed, albeit via pizza three days in a row and as many fruit bars as they want. Healthy. Ah, but alas we are alive and safe! I think. I know this first trimester fatigue passes, my stuffy nose will not, and soon I will have three little ones in my care. Then what?

Is there hope and help? Well, yes, but whoever said having children was a blessing.....was right. However, let me refer back to my opening statement that motherhood was designed to make me holy. Being sanctified day in and day out is hard work. Let me emphasize that there's no way to prepare for what kind of hard work lies ahead. Some of you may have children with special needs. Perhaps you thought you were done and ended up with a bonus baby, putting a wrench in any financial plans, not to mention vacations or schooling. Each one of our children are different, as is our job each day. And it's not just one job of being a mother, it's multiple jobs of being a mother to each child. And if you have a job, well, then you wear many hats, one of mine which I tip to you! Homeschooling? Then you're a teacher too, to each different child. At the end of the day this can be nothing but exhausting!

Think of the times when you're in the kitchen cutting up veggies (because who wouldn't want to put effort into the health of your kids?), only to have one child hanging on your leg who cries the second you try to move, another child is running in literal circles because it's funny, knocking over a glass of milk (still funny) and then getting so caught up in the moment that they pee on the floor instead of the toilet, perhaps another one asking for dinner to be ready NOW and a baby who needs your breast so bad that if you don't stop what you're doing his little red face is going to explode. When you finally get to feeding him, he does explode, at the other end. Dinner is either burnt or it's 9pm. Fail.

So we have other mothers was can lean on and listen to when times get hard. It's hard to be a good mother when your kids are having bad days, when there's defiance and disobedience, when they're sick - you get the idea. And the good days leave you feeling blessed and refreshed. But can we have that same feeling of blessedness and refreshment when the day has gone kaput? How do we separate our children's behavior from the place of our heart?

Scripture says yes! I say yes! Knowing that I have a God who has gone through everything (EVERYTHING) we have leads me to know that He understands this pain and suffering. Our labors are not in vain, and His promises for blessing are true and real. God does not lie. (God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? Num. 23:18-20).

Psalm 127:3 says "Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him."

Think about that. A reward. A heritage. There may be difficult days in child rearing, but each one is the Lord telling you that you're worthy to be a mother. A special mother. There is nothing little about a mother and what she does. Whether you have one child or many your role is very specific and holy! Some of you may not have children yet, whether it be by choice or infertility, this does not exclude you. Many women who were barren prayed for a child. God does what pleases Him the most to bring about your holiness. Sometimes we (me) need a few children to show us just how selfish and prideful we can be, and other times humbling yourself before a sovereign God asking for a child expands your faith (not to mention others around you) immensely.

If you're having a hard day then be encouraged that you are exactly where the Lord wants you!

I do love my children. I think everything they do is the cutest, cuter than other kids, of course. Even in their disobedience I can find humor (trying not to laugh in front of them), and even though I am super tired, being able to cuddle with my sick children brings joy. My children will not lay on my lap for much longer, they will not "need" a hug from me every time they get hurt or even ask me to feed them. There is a joy in their littleness. There is also a joy in their independence.

 So, I write all this to simply express how I can feel. I don't always look upon my children with radiating joy overflowing abundantly into the streams of my happy heart. Sometimes I want them to go to their room so I can have some quiet. Sometimes I want "me" time - usually during a time when they need me most. This, I believe, is not abnormal. We mothers are made of flesh. The same flesh that is cursed with sin. The same flesh that belongs to the old man. Putting on the "new," turning from sin and working out my salvation is a deliberate decision. It is a dying to myself all day, every day. I even confess that as I write this I am hoping my daughter doesn't wake from her nap so that I don't have to go get her, which will interrupt this writing. I don't think I'm a bad mother. I am a human working out my sanctification everyday with the calling that God has given me: Mother. Mother of Ryan. Mother of Brooklyn. Mother of Baby to be. And let's not forget that my first calling, before the children, was to be a wife. To love, serve and respect my husband is my first role. To come by his side and help him, to encourage his leadership and strength will only help me be a better mother. To work each day as unto the Lord, He will indeed bless me and my household. The woman who fears the Lord will be blessed by her children, her husband and by God (Proverbs 31:10-31).

"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:15

Now, I don't know if anything I said even makes sense, or can help you in anyway, but if you're thinking you're alone and crazy, think again. You're in good company, good crazy company!

 Happy 4th of July!
Today we are doing a simple celebration with my parents, grilling some food and Broomfield's community festivities. Since the open space where they shoot off the fireworks is right next to our neighborhood we will sit in our front yard to watch. This way Brooklyn can be in bed and not be tortured by fatigue and loud noises. This will be Ryan's first year staying up to watch them, so we'll see how this goes!

To prepare for our little BBQ, I made some Red, White and Blue skewers with pineapple stars on top. Ryan had fun helping me "spray paint" the mallows and cut the pineapple with a cookie cutter.

I already had the blue food spray for Ryan's upcoming shark party, so it was perfect that I could spray white mallows for the occasion.

And there you have it! A simple treat for your guests. Also, as the Junco/Bruzza/Wassmer family states, "Waste Not, Want Not" I sliced the leftover star cut-outs into little triangles. The entire pineapple is being used for yummy consumption!

My Friend Anna - her story

Here is a video of my friend Anna Peterson giving her testimony about her latest ordeal giving birth to her 7th child. Some of you may remember that six months ago I was asking you to fervently pray for her as she was in critical condition for several days, and at one point I even worried that my next visit to Fresno would be for a funeral. Praise God that those fears have been calmed and our prayers were hear around the world. Anna is still in the recovery process undergoing continual doctor's appointments and medications to make sure she is on the right path. I am so happy to make this post today as she shares how her life has been changed once again!

Just chumming around!

Making Ryan's shark party invites was so much fun...for me! A "quick" trip through Hobby Lobby and I am finding all kinds of things to make.

I asked Ryan what kind of party he wanted, giving him the options of shark or pirate. He was certain he wanted sharks. So I set out on an endeavor to find invites. Seeing that I don't want to spend too much I decided to make the invites myself (this is when my creative juices start churning and I start having fun). I went online and found a few ideas for the wording and design. I bought the blue paper, then printed them out  making sure they would fit into the 5x7 envelopes I bought. I originally wanted to just do the shark bite, but then I saw the sand. Thus was born the border!
 I also bought a red paint marker to outline the bite mark. Then I took Elmer's glue around the edge and then poured sand generously over the glue patting it lightly to make sure it's covered. Then I simply picked up the invite and let the sand fall off, and then let it dry. In the end were cute little invites waiting to dry and be mailed.

The most time consuming part was cutting out the bite marks, but that's not all that bad. I had the invites in a Pyrex pan to put the sand on which allowed for an easy pour back into the bottle.

Now it's on to planning the cake (which Ryan said he wants a "shark fire cake"). I think I'll just find a way to make a shark cake and then put candles on it. I am also planning to have little chum buckets for the kids filled with goodies. It'll be so much fun! Hopefully for everyone, but probably mostly for me. I love event planning, so I flourish here. I think. We'll see!

Gourmet Mother's Day

I ventured up to my parents house for the whole day yesterday, which was Mother's Day. My father had prepared a wonderful meal for me and my own mum. He had marinated steaks, baked sweet potatoes, shrimp, slice watermelon and and array of cheese and crackers. For a sweet treat he made these beautiful chocolate covered strawberries! He did the dipping and decorating himself. I was definitely full all day long.

My little kids came with me and spent the day playing with Nana and Papa. They played so hard that Ryan fell asleep on the way home (rare) and both are still a little cranky this morning. A nice relaxing day filled with naps sounds like a good idea.

My mother has collected some of the Biltmore Inspirations' dishes including the Olmsted Collection and the Lotus Leaf Bowls and Platter. It made for some beautiful decor, and perfect for serving the strawberries!

The colors on this platter are just spectacular! As the lighting in your house changes, so do the highlights on these dishes. I had fun playing photo shoot just because I don't have these dishes yet!

All Things Paisley

Well, in just over a week my little Brooklyn will officially be 1 year old. What?! Yes, she's already a year. Since the first 6 months are usually a blur, I really feel like she's only 6 months old. I had a hard time calling Ryan a toddler after he turned one - it just can't be!

Needless to say, I've been preparing for her birthday. I've fallen in love with all things paisley, and I found a sweet little paisley butterfly online that I am having piped onto a cake, and now I am loving paisley and butterflies! Here's a sneak peak into some of the crafts I've been diving into to make her 1st a one-of-a-kind day.
Beginnings of butterfly favors

This is the paisley butterfly that will be on her cake

Working on the favors
Renewed Candle with ribbon and jewels

 Just as with Ryan's 1st birthday party, I do believe I am having the most fun with this! More pictures and details to come as things come together. I really love having all these "crafty" things to do. I have a feeling I'm going to be one of those moms that shoves her kids aside during their kindergarten craft day just to make my own, then I'm going to point at some kids "art" and laugh. Just kidding. I would never do that. But I probably would make my own craft.

One of my new FAVORITE items is the host special for June: the Lotus Leaf Bowl Set. These bowls are, yes, bowls! Chicken Broccoli Braid

Here's what you'll need:

* 2 cups cooked, chopped chicken breast
* 1/2 cream cheese (or mayo)
* 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
* 1 cup chopped broccoli
* 1/4 cup chopped onion
* 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
* 2 or 3 cloves of pressed garlic
* 8oz shredded sharp cheddar cheese
* 2 pkgs dinner croissants
* Sliced almonds
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place broccoli, onion, bell pepper, garlic and cream cheese in bowl and mix together. Roll out croissants onto baking sheet and press them together to make a rectangular shape. Place and layer all ingredients down the middle of rectangle. Slice 1 1/2 inch cuts down each side, about 2 inches apart. Pull once slice from each slide at a time, twist, and stick together. Do this all the way down the rectangle. Brush with an egg white and top with sliced almonds. Bake for approximately 25-28 minutes or until golden brown.

Slice, serve and enjoy!
Now, if you're like me, I buy in bulk, so when I get home I separate my meat by the pound and chicken breasts into bags with usually 3 in each. Since there's three of us in this house right now that eat solid foods, I almost always have three frozen breasts. In this case, I cook my chicken in the crock pot in a broth with garlic. This makes the chicken very tender and easy to shred. I also had plenty of chicken left over from this recipe. So, with a little bit of Biltmore's Weston Wheeler BBQ sauce we were able to have "pulled chicken" sandwiches! As my son would say, "DEELISH!"

Latest creations and shin-digs

You didn't think I'd post pictures of food I've prepared with a glass of wine, did you? Ha! The other night I had a great, delicious and HEALTHY(ish) meal. First, I made a Quinoa salad. Did you know it's pronounced Keen-wah? I didn't. Anyway, the salad contained chopped onion, tomatoes, cucumber, black beans, corn, cilantro and lime juice. It was very good. Then, the really healthy part came from Papa Murphy's: the Chicken Mediterranean deLight pizza. This contained garlic, olive oil, chicken, spinach and sun dried tomatoes. That too tasted quite awesome. All this was accompanied by the ambiance of my little candle in the little lantern (Courtyard Collection) and of course my Easter birdy.

On the left you will see a DEELISH dessert. I call it "Lemon Raspberry Squares." Original, I know. I simply used a box recipe for the lemon squares and then I added about 1/3 cup of Biltmore's Raspberry Syrup to an 8oz tub of Cool Whip. Once the lemon bars were cooled, I topped them with the raspberry whippies and then drizzled a little bit more of the syrup on top.

Now, for my Easter decor I simply had a TON OF FUN! Is there anyway to exaggerate that any more? Once we were done coloring our eggs I put them in my Blue Ridge Pedestal Dish. Then I started adding accents and snapping away with my camera.

 Accompanied by my Vineyard Grape Basket and Courtyard Lanterns, this made my console table ready to welcome the Easter Bunny. Some spring flowers, candles and eggs just made this a joy for my eyes to gaze upon. It might just be me, but I love the colors and feelings that are associated with Spring and Easter.

 Now, for my own touch of creativity (which I am proud of because I hardly feel creative at all), I planned a surprise party for my mother's 60th birthday. As part of her gift I got her the Olmsted Oak dining set and the Acorns. I wrapped the boxes and hot-glued some colorful flowers on instead of using bows. My dad got her the Fleur de Lis Wine Chiller and I filled that with flowers and bottles of wine and cards that our family sent before the party. It was a lot of fun, especially since she had no idea. And of course, she loved the gifts!

New Ideas from our Fall Collections

There's sooooooo much more coming from Biltmore! As for April, below are a couple of informational flyers regarding hosting and starting your own business. The May specials come with a Mother's Day appreciation and deals on some our newest Spring collections! Once I can post the May flyer I will have it up!

Did you order wonderful stuff in the Fall only to find we came out with a Spring catalog? No fear! Our home decor items are so versatile you can use them for almost anything you want: Organization in the playroom, kitchen decor, hosting large parties and more!
Lisa Conard wine chiller being used as utensil holder
Vineyard Vase and candle pillar holders with a Spring touch
Don't have any food to bake in this dish, just plant flowers!

Because many of our items are food safe, this allows then to be used for so many things. As for me, I don't really drink a lot of white wine so the need for a wine chiller isn't very pressing. I do love the Lisa Conard collection, and the wine chiller, for me, would make a great vase or as a tool to organize.
Another item I really love, and can't wait to have it the white Vineyard Vase. This vase really does signify all that I desire to have in house as decor. It's classic and traditional, yet you can do so much to give it a modern twist. As a girl born in Texas, I am a little bit country through and through.

From the formal beauty of the Italian Garden to the breathtaking presence of ancient trees in America's first managed forests, Biltmore's lush landscape is a living tribute to Olmsted's genius. Our horticultural experts continually work to preserve the original vision for the gardens and grounds, including our All America Rose Garden featuring more than 250 varieties.
